well, i’m beginning to think we’re not going to be able to bloom… i’m thinking we can’t outrun the coming core rot, if true.

i think if later necessary, it will all be very very cut back, and attempt to reroot.

…wait and watch. …either that or go ahead and take it out to examine it.

when i watered it today, this… (picture).
plus, there are sooo many “bumps” where buds will grow… but i’m not “feeling” the energy there to push all that out.
as i said, seems the buds can’t outrun whatever is going on at the other end.

and at least one air root has been slowly “rotting”. now perhaps another, very slow. not sure.

i’ve seen several good videos of saving and rerooting, but i suppose only if it doesn’t get well into the upper core. hard to say what’s up, yet. or, i knew all along, so maybe i missed my chance to save it.

Tedro, sending your plant good vibes.

This is the time some might consider "to chop. or not to chop" that flower spike.

Chopping the flower spike might conserve energy but I'm no fan of doing that.

You still have really good aerial roots.

One method I like using is watering orchids via aerial roots. You just stick one aerial root into a glass of water. Then if you want you can alternate between aerial roots every few days so they can dry out periodically between. That way you can literally keep the pot bone dry throughout winter if you wanted to... It works. As long as you have enough aerial roots and I know yours has.

thanks for the positive waves!

lost that other little bud today.
maybe those are the price for trimming (about an inch) off the end of a leaf, last week. —total opposite end from spike tip; while that leaf is same side as spike, it’s very long and curved beyond the opposite side.

my leaves look pretty good. even better than a few months ago when i began to complain about to much purpling or black on leaves. i reduced light back then, finally. (i had a second lamp.) it was after that, and, i believe unrelated to the root rot i found. i’ve included what the leaves used to look like for comparison. also included a picture of the rot i discovered back then… those are early to mid september. perhaps some overfeeding was also involved, no real evidence of that that i know of, unless an accumulation or something… but i think it’s a rot.

as long as my leaves look good, i think i’ll keep going.

sound good?

a few buds should be close to opening, i’ll wait to see what happens there, too.

—i’ve included a picture of the damaged leaf before i trimmed it a week ago.

i’ve taken to occasionally spraying down, with water, the aerial roots. i never did that before this time.

meh, i dunno man....based on those pics, my limited experience would just be like, “whatever, looks fine”. just coax those growing root tips down into the pot and let em grow. the foliage does look sorta red, but, whateva....

seems like a decent amount of new root growth

tmoney the pictures on the right are the old pics.

You will see the leaves are all red and it has no flower spike.

If you looks at the pictures where it has got a flower spike and compare the leaves you will see a marked improvement.

Ironically the same happened with mine and mine is also thinking about dropping a lower leaf like tedro's so who knows if that had anything to do with what I've been doing or not.

yes, i lost (from old pic) both lower leaves, left and right).
i’m a bit worried about length of time these first buds are taking… on the edge. shouldn’t be more than 2 weeks until i get a better idea.

if those don’t open and die, and, the many baby buds aren’t poking up… may be time to take another look at the core, then decide.

tedro, I swear mine is just copying yours.

Look the lowest bud it turning yellow, it's not going to make it.

Lowest leaf thinking about dropping off.

Otherwise doing fine but I have moved it to a warmer spot just in case because its been ridiculously cold

i really don’t like what’s “not” happening

i took her out and did some chopping.
but i think the rot is in or near the top quarter of the core.

here are some photos of what i just did.

about 10 photos would not upload something about a security token so here’s a link to the pictures:
root rot repot etc - Google Photos

I put a bunch of rocks that I had for my bamboo in the bottom the sphagnum that you see is very little only on top.
after bottom rocks > bark type balls, etc > then some sphagnum. I lost an aerial route and I tried to get the other ones into the medium plant had 2 good roots, I noticed those roots originated high on the core. Maybe I should’ve cut the core off below those.

It looks to me like the right or the disease or whatever it is it’s probably into the crown or the upper core I don’t know the proper term analogy but I’m dividing the core into quadrants I guess up and down. If you look very carefully you can see little black around where is some roots had tried to grow very slight. And may be a little bit around the roots that are growing. I noticed that when I pulled out some of the black that left kind of a cup like hole.

if you can see it in pics, one dark root, but somewhat firm, plump, i pulled at and ripped — see the bare greeness? what will happen to that? just curious.

so, what i cut off will ? make little difference, the problem is already higher. cleaning it up, removing those small core wrapped pieces of dried old gone leaves, etc, will help, but not cure … not by a long shot.

i also think the underneath lowest leaf is showing signs of stress. amazing it made it this long, i think, all of it.

probably have totally serious chop as much as plantly possible to attempt a rare crown core (plant) save. ?

i’d need that root nutrient probably. when i used to clone plants i cut and dusted with root-tone. then used clear plastic wrap as roof until signs of growth. idk.

I removed a lot of the leftover from all the leaves and anything else I could. Those things were definitely probably holding moisture.

I think she’s probably done for but I’ll keep working with it.

i think i shoulda spot sprayed the black spots with 50/50 water and 3% hydrogen peroxide — seen that a bunch on youtube.

if you can tell on those today pics, sorry i shoulda made effort for this: leaves are making black rear boarders/margins. top too. easier to see from back.

also, i think the VERY FIRST sign i shoulda adjusted for was/is leaf tip curl. but, afaik, with totally other type plants, leaf curl is usually over feeding.

i had two years plus of super blooming, extra blooming both times, too. 100 flowers or more, all together. one spike.
so, maybe it’s just in the genes to die off now.
i must say, this spike is just POW. loaded with nascent buds. too bad. pretty sure i messed it up during/after last spike blooming.

thanks

ps. if this is an empathic plant, it’s mirroring me (medically), i’m afraid.

pps. i am baffled by what happened after 2 years and 3 profuse bloomings. indeed, my original repot had lots of roots. but looking closer at those old pics, some more should have been clipped at that time. see: Shared album - Ted Rogers (ichi) - Google Photos

Do not cut the "core," ever. That's not something the plant can replace. In all of these photos, I haven't seen any rot in the crown. Or any real disease for that matter! Do you have a photo of that?

No need for this. It will do nothing for you plant. Check out this thread: SaraJean asked a question about peroxide...

I'd recommend cutting that spike off to save the plant. A plant with such a small root system can't support flowers and may end up blooming itself to death.
