What kind of lighting for a vanilla plant inside a greenhouse for the winter
Default What kind of lighting for a vanilla plant inside a greenhouse for the winter

I am about going to move my vanilla plants inside a temp greenhouse for the winter in a few weeks and would like to see if I can get some good growth leading into next spring before they head back outside. What would be the best lighting setup for them?

greenhouse is a 6x6x6. the vanilla plant is currently growing outside in NE FL under a 30% shade cloth. growth never seems to really take off compared to others i have seen.

What are your low outdoor temperatures in winter? Vanilla grows during hot, humid and wet weather. Light isn't that important. They start out in deep shade and climb up trees to flower in the sun.

So i am 9a so low 30s or high 20s. but i will have a 1500w space heater in the greenhouse. never saw anything in the greenhouse below 60s last winter and it was very humid but had no lights in there and it is on my covered back porch, so natural light wasnt great.

It's unlikely to grow in the winter. You should expect growth in the warm, humid summer. If it didn't grow it may not have had enough water or humidity.

I agree. Light isn't as important as warmth. Vanilla likes warm temperatures. It also grows faster as it gets older and the stem thickens.
