Yellow Spot on Phalaepnosis Leaf
Default Yellow Spot on Phalaepnosis Leaf

I got this beautiful phalaepnosis that was on clearance and it came with some purplish markings on the leaf and crown, and a yellow spot on a leaf. I’m not too concerned, but I want to know what they’re about. If it helps anyone to know, she looked dehydrated when I first got her, she has nice roots though.

From what I can see, you have a nice healthy P. schilleriana or possibly a schilleraian hybrid with an exceptionally good full shape. The yellow spot is only a concern if it is enlarging or more develop. Spots on orchid leaves are not unusual, especially after being handled a lot in shipping.

There is a red tint to the leaves of about 25% of my phalaenopsis and most started 2-3 spikes a month or so ago and are in very good health. Unless you are giving it direct sun other than in the early morning and late afternoon, there is no reason to consider changing you culture.

Congratulations on a very nice purchase.

Thanks for replying, also she wasn't shipped to me, I got her at an orchid shop. Do you think there's a possibility that this is some sort of infection? Since there is also a strange marking on the underside of the leaf, in the same spot as the yellow spot on the top.

An infection can't be ruled out, but it looks to me like the bottom of the leaf got dinged. The spot is also in a location where infections are least likely to start. It could possibly be a spot caused by an insect.

If it were mine, I wouldn't be at all concerned but would watch it for a few days. If it doesn't get bigger and more spots don't develop by the end of the weekend, you can be sure it's nothing to worry about.

Edit: Oh, and also, welcome to OB!

It also looks to me like mechanical damage, or maybe old insect damage. I agree with K-Sci, just keep an eye on it, if it doesn't get worse, no big deal.
