Paph newly sprouting leaf died? Opinions?
Default Paph newly sprouting leaf died? Opinions?

Hello
I have a paph that is sprouting a new leaf, and the leaf has turned dry and brown/yellow. I have it under my skylights that have a frosted covering but it can get quite bright, in which case I move it away. Sometimes a miss watering but usually water once a week or more. Could this be from lack of water or too much light? Or is it because water got into the crown somehow? What should I do to the leaf?

Actually, that looks to me like a developing flower bud - that may or may not emerge. There is a nice new growth next to that growth, so the plant will be OK. I would suggest just observing it... it could still turn into a bud, or not... When was the last time it was potted? Watering frequency is dictated by your conditions, but these do not like to dry out.

Only place I have ever seen Paph spikes emerge was from the center of a growth (and once they do, the growth eventually dies off) To get a multi-spike plant, one needs a bunch of growths. And many, if not most, don't develop roots on the new growth for quite awhile (like a year after the leaves) and then develop the spike maybe a year after that. I mostly don't have the patience for Paphs... have a few that have found their way to my house mostly from society raffle tables, but not something I seek out for that reason. (I'm not young enough to wait and wait and wait)

I agree with Roberta, it looks like a blasted flower sheath. I wouldn't expect it to develope a viable spike but you have a nice new growth starting.

If you'd like to learn more on Paphs, here are some notes from a lecture given by the orchid curator at the Huntington Gardens in Los Angeles.

Thankyou , that was the most interesting thing I've ever read on paphs. Thoroughly enjoyed that.
I will observe my paph, yes it is possible I let it dry out for too long, it was potted about 4 months ago in orchiata, spag, and perlite . Some charcoal too. I truly hope it's a blasted bud and not rot but the rest of the plant appears healthy, no signs of browning.ty everyone for your answers
