Yellow/Pale spot on Oncidium bulb
Default Yellow/Pale spot on Oncidium bulb

Hello,

I got my first oncidium a couple of months ago and have been trying to get it to grow quickly this spring by giving it lots of water and light. So far, my oncidium has three new points of growth; however, I recently noticed a small pale/yellow spot on part of its pseudobulb. Is this possibly sunburn from too much light? Or is it cause for concern? thank you for you time

The plant overall looks very good. It doesn't look to me as though it'a getting too much light. Oncidium growths have a number of bracts protecting them as they develop. These eventually yellow, then turn brown as the growth matures. I think this is what's happening.

Your plant is potted higher in the pot than I usually pot them, and has roots exposed. If it is growing well I would leave it alone. The new growth will send its roots where it wants. But if new roots start drying prematurely, you could consider adding more bark to cover those roots to the bases of the pseudobulbs.

The pot is larger than I'd use for other orchids of the same size; it's fine for your Oncidium, because it will grow so quickly it will fill that pot before the bark breaks down.

Orchid teach patience. You can't make them bloom faster by giving them more of anything. Just give them culture that is as close to optimum as possible, and they will bloom when they are ready. They do everything slowly, they won't be rushed.
