Unhappy Yellow leaves with brown spots and dead buds on new orchid

Hi all! New to the forum and to owning orchids! I have a new orchid I bought in the flower district in NYC two weeks ago and it is already showing some signs of unhappiness (I think). I do not know what type of orchid it is. The plant has developed multiple yellow/brown leaves that ultimately fall off and now a few of the flower buds have died before blooming. Any suggestions on what is going on in terms of watering (under or over), sunlight (not enough or too much brightness), temp etc. I tried to figure out it on on YouTube but no clear answer so figured I would try this sage group of experts!! Thanks

howdy, while im prolly not the appropriate welcoming committee as im pretty new to all this myself, welcome to the orchidboard, hahah! that said, take my advice worth a grain of salt.

we also starting getting into bulb type orchids recently, and our experience so far is that they just may not be as easy to keep perfect looking as other plants. ours have been bought from reputable suppliers whose other plants have arrived in immaculate condition, and these things just always seem to be a bit rag tag. dunno, maybe just unlucky here....

the rest of the plant seems to look ok, but as new growers we have found out to first check out the medium that it came in. there lots of advice on that, but i would start there. if it looks old, or super tight packed sphagnum then we usually try to repot right away.
don’t stress too much i think, at least not yet. it also seems common for orchids with buds to drop them when you bring them home to your environment, so not to surprising there, either. one other thing, just to mention cause it’s new info for us, people say on some of these to water on the outer edge of the pot, to not get much in between the bulbs as it could lead to rot. not sure if that applies to this one, as i really can’t help you on id, these are just beginner orchid tips that we learned and i thought id share with ya. good luck, and im sure the real experts will chime in shortly with much better info!

Welcome to the Orchid Board!

This is a Miltoniopsis. You can use the Search feature in the top menu to read more.

They're picky about growing conditions. They prefer cool temperatures, high humidity and bright light, but not direct sun. They're difficult in most homes because people often keep them warmer than Miltoniopsis prefer; humidity is much lower than they prefer; and leaves burn if bright light heats them. They prefer being evenly moist, and never drying completely.
