Looking for a Cattleya recommendation
Cool Looking for a Cattleya recommendation

Hi, I am a newbie to orchids and love to acquire my 1st cattleya from https://www.ecuagenera.com/
I am looking for tropical high humidity SG, a high frag, ez to care for cattleya, any recommendations?
Let me describe my conditions,
less than 30 USD, I have hot south face window, i can plans to place this new plant near this window with some indirect light. Water freq, I am home everyday and love to over protect my plants, so feel will be ok to water it 2 or 3 x daily, no issue. Love big blooms, but most of all, highly aromatic blooms as my current blooms have no frag.

Hi Gingerdip, welcome to Orchidboard!

I have moved you post and created its own thread since it wasn't related to the thread it was orginally placed in. You're also more likely to get replies if it's in a separate thread with a clear title.

If you want fragrance, look for Catt aclandiae or hybrids with this species in their parentage. It is a very, very fragrant Catt, with a nie spicy scent. I'm sure other members will have more suggestions for you.

Just curious, why do you specifically want to buy from Ecuagenera? It may be easier to first determine which Catts, or types of Catts would match your requirements, and then look for some local vendors that carry them.

Good luck in your search, and perhaps other members can point out some options at Ecuagenera. I don't know Catts well enough to be able to help much more.

hi, mayb you r right, cos I have been shopping around and local growers who have cattleya are already selling small unmature plants some keikis at prices higher than Ecua, and ecua has quoted me very low shipping cost, so I can buy cattleya at good price and ship them to a local nursery in singapore and pick them up.
I also like the way they have a pricelist which shows which is W orchids, and their names. With local growers, no names and i have to ask many qns..

---------- Post added at 03:01 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:58 AM ----------

BTW, vandas, dendro are more common in singapore nurseries, i have been to a few, it seems cattleya not as common, there are still selling though, i am making a trip to a few nurseries this weekend to see if there are any. esle, I am open to getting from ecua, a local grower told me plants from them, are typically big and mature. since i am a newbie, it will encourage me to get a mature near bloom plant then a keiki which may never bloom in the next few yrs

G.D. ------ also take a look at this link here and maybe check reviews on them ------- such as orchidhub.

link

Very interestingly, and surprisingly - I looked at sites ebay.com.sg and ebay.com.my ....... and typed 'cattleya' and 'orchids' into the search box. And the number of hits I got was ........ zero! I didn't expect that.

Walkeriana are interesting (I think) as well as fragrant.
Not sure if Ecuagenera carries them.

Don't choose plants for which a big difference in temperatures between day/night is important, unless you can provide that.
If I'm not mistaken, Singapure is always hot/warm and many Catts need night temps around 16ºC or lower.

It would be too hard to find the right orchid from that list. I just had a look. It is enormous.
They don't just have all the species they have all the hybrids too, like Laeliocattleya, Brassolaeliocattleya, Rhyncholaeliocattleya, Sophrolaeliocattleya,

I personally like Cattleya luteola so will recommend that one for you if it helps. Compact, fragrant, warm growing.

You didn't mention size, if you want big, go for laelia purpurata

I just noticed that 'orchidhub' mentions 'wholesale' ----- but I guess might still be worth a try asking them if they do sell orchids to general public, or can get links or leads from them.
