mark drops buds. way to go new orchid grower!

well, bummed to wake up to this today. it happens I suppose, and ill blame it on the shipping and acclimation. hopefully we can keep the new buds going, and live to make more spikes! I kinda feel a bit like a jerk to get this nice sought after plant just to let it drop all the 🌸. oh well, ce la vie

How long has it been roughly - since the day it first arrived? These things can definitely happen for shipped orchids. Just maintain nice temperature and humidity for the plant - not too bright a light ----- and not direct sunlight. Do you grow other phalaenopsis orchids too?

That's not too surprising for an orchid that was shipped in bloom, and during a cold time of year. If the plant is healthy and happy that's the most important thing! But yes, it's always a disappointment to see blooms and bud wither and fall off after only a couple days, so I feel your pain...

The leaves of your plant look quite dark; the species it's made of can take more light than most other Phal.

It would recover faster and bloom better if you put it somewhere very bright, without direct sun.

hey, thanks the words of support....such a little thing but sort of sad.

and yes, it just arrived on Thursday, so....oh well. that’s good to know about the light also. we put in the shady spot in the house like we do for most plants we get as the transition to the space, but I’ll move it to join the other Phal in the sunnier room!

I took the opportunity to report it also, and I’m glad I did. as usual, super soggy moss packed in and this one even had a little plastic net around the football inside, so it was good to get it up to speed I think. anyways, it looks strong and actually growing about 5 new little roots I noticed this morning as well!

Some Phalaenopsis are really sensitive to changes in light, humidity, and temperature while in bud. I don’t have this particular hybrid, but I do have some that are sensitive. Once they settled in, however, there has been no issues with bud drop on blooms initiated in my care.

It’s always a disappointment to lose flowers, but I don’t think it reflects on your care. It may even be a blessing in disguise as the plant can focus its resources to adapting to its new home and be ready to put of a good show next time it blooms.

yeah, we are finding more or less permanent homes for them as we get them settled. also I figured I would cut the spike that dropped the flowers, since it was already browning at the top. it’s looking happy, and if I can save it to bloom again by sacrificing now, well then fine. also, rereading I realize I have lots of typos, sorry about that!
attached is it’s new shelf buddy, another doritis/ Phal, so nice together they are the Doritos. even tho the mini mark came labeled as a Phal, and the other labeled doritis. to me their growth habit is quite similar, so they are the Doritos now.

I'll just add that pretty much every orchid grower loses an orchid at some point. I'll also add that I've rarely lost an orchid once I've had it for a year so if you can get it through the first few months or even year you'll have good chances but if you do lose a few in the first few months I'd blame it on excessive transport stress, if they are not well established that can sometimes be hard to prevent declining.
I never expect to keep blooms in postal orchids, sometimes you can but if they need a repot like this one certainly needed it will add more repot stress but can't be avoided.
So I think you should be fine, the spring is approaching and the added sunshine should make it start producing roots and leaves.

I like that... Doritos... having one orchid is like eating one potato chip - or corn chip. To make a bit of sense of the naming... Doritanopsis was a separate genus closely related to Phalaenopsis, so the human-made genus (nothogenus) of Doritis x Phalaenopsis was Doritanopsis. However, taxonomists now consider Doritis not to be separate from Phalaenopsis. So Doritis and Doritanopsis are now Phalaenopsis. Still, hardly anybody can stop at just one...

Don't cut the spike the entire way, maybe just a few nodes down. It might bloom again off the main spike.

I agree that it might be that your home has completely different conditions than the vendor's greenhouse and that may have caused it. Drafts, will, too. When I want an orchid 'In bud' I have learned to order from a place that has the same conditions as my home. So many times I have been otherwise disappointed when the buds drop off. Hope it will soon send out new buds for you!
