no roots green stem - can be saved?
Default no roots green stem - can be saved?

Hi,
I have this orchid for a long time, I don't know why but its' roots keep dying all the time. It's in a very poor condition right now and I want to know whether it's already dead or can be saved somehow and if so how?

would be happy to hear any tips! I try to take care of it really well but somehow keep failing (I have been watering it once a week and let all the water fall from the bottom of the pot which has holes)

I'm attaching some photos

Welcome to the Orchid Board!

I think that is a Phalaenopsis orchid. A new plant grew on the old flower stem. The plant from which the stem grew died. A small plant growing on a flower stem is called a keiki.

The keiki will live and grow if it makes more roots. It needs to be very warm and humid for that to happen. I would put the stem into an enclosure to keep the humidity up. You could use an aquarium or translucent/transparent plastic box with a tight lid. You could also use a very large glass vase. You can cut the bottom of the stem so it fits if you need to. The stem can lie sideways in a box or it could be upright. Put a small glass of water inside to keep the humidity high. Put it where it gets bright indirect light. If you are lucky the keiki will form new roots. When they are about 5-8cm long you can cut the keiki off the stem and put it into a pot.

You can read about growing Phals here. From the left yellow menu choose Forums, then Beginners. Look near the top for The Phal abuse stops here.

Do you have any sphag or rock wool you could put in there with it to retain moisture ?

If so you can open the top a bit and avoid stagnation and mold

Unfortunately I don't have any of these. I will try and get them, are there other alternative I might be able to use?

To increase the humidity, your can just place a saturated piece of absorbent paper or cloth in the vase with the plant - but making NO contact with it.

Personally, I’m afraid you removed the plant from the inflorescence prematurely. That is typically not done until in has its own root system.

I should have been more clear. I meant you could trim just enough of the stem to fit into the jar. Keikiis draw water from the stem and the stem continues to photosynthesize. I think your plant is large enough to survive until it makes new roots, but it may lose leaves. If you can get a kelp-based root stimulant, treating with that once a week may help.
