I just wanted to add that my C. maxima coerulea bloomed last fall with no sheath as well.

Do C. mossiae buds form without a sheath?

Actually, it's even more of a bright magenta in real life, less neon glow though. It's a shame because the photos don't do justice to the beautiful hues! The petals are crystalline with some white veining that makes it difficult to photograph.

Once it opens fully, I'll try taking a photo under various lighting conditions.
