Help identifying orchids and black leaf spots!
Default Help identifying orchids and black leaf spots!

Hello, I'm new to the forum. I recently inherited some orchids from my mother's friend (that's literally all I know about where they came from or how they've been cared for till now). I've only had phals before now, and I have no idea what kind of orchids these are or how to best care for them. I'd appreciate any help figuring out what they are and what's wrong with them!

More about growing conditions: my phals are currently growing in an air-conditioned sunroom with a south and east facing window, plus skylight and soon a grow light that should provide 1000-3000 FC depending on location in the sunroom. There is also a fan and humidifier. I'm located in a subtropical climate with high humidity (zone 9a) but have most of the more tropical plants inside the sunroom. The phals bloom about twice a year. This is the room the new orchids will go in once I make sure they're not infested/infected...

- large orchid with large black spots on leaves, no flowers, in a gallon-sized black pot
- Tall orchid with dark buds, lots of little black spots on the thin leaves
- orchid with little purple fragrant flowers. Maybe a dendrobium?? Looks mostly healthy except one black spot
- orchid that is apparently growing sideways out of the pot...would also appreciate some advice on how to repot this one...
- orchid with a bunch of yellow leaves and brown spots
- phal with pocked leaf (is it a disease? infestation? trauma? genetic?) with my hand in the photo. Only the tip is pocked. It has a leaf on the opposite side that is pocked at the tips as well. New leaf is coming in that looks normal.

Thank you!

Help identifying orchids and black leaf spots!
Default update

So just updating in case anyone sees similar issues. Got more history from my mom, and turns out her friend grew them outside under a sun screen but the city removed it and most of her orchids burned. None of the spots have spread since my last post.

--large orchid: sun damage
--tall orchid: suspect mold, will repot and see what I find
--orchid with purple flowers: sun damage
--orchid with yellow leaves: unclear, will repot and see what I find. Mom thinks she over-watered it during transport.
--phal with pocked/pitted leaf: sun damage in the distant past, probably last year

First, Welcome!
The tall one with buds I'm not sure about - if has pseudubulbs, they're small, maybe a Cymbidium but could be something else. Once it blooms, we'll know. (and be better able to address culture) I think most of the rest are Dendrobiums, The pink one is Dendrobium kingianum or a hybrid of it. These are all tough as nails. You will have ugly leaves until they drop (which they eventually will) but no permanent harm done. The one that is climbing out of the pot definitely needs a repot. The ones that have been growing outside can continue to do so... if you go below freezing in the winter you may need to find a protected spot for those (like next to the house), but if they grew outside in your area, no worries at all. So these are definitely a more durable bunch than your Phals that to need to be kept at "people temperature" at night. If you have room to bring them in they will no doubt be OK, but actually you are likely to get better blooming if they get chilled in the fall and into the winter. Also, Dendrobiums like these tend to need fairly bright light to bloom. Some protection from the blazing noonday summer sun is needed (that's when they got toasted), but certainly much more light than a Phal.
