Identification of new orchids for watering and potting purposes?

No names or identifiers were given for either but my novice expertise makes me think they're both onicidium.

They both have pseudo bulbs with similar flower shapes and thin, long leaves.









Do you think the style of potting is acceptable for these plants? Perhaps not ideal given lower airflow with a total glass pot...

And watering, do onicidiums like moist?

You are right they are Oncidiums (technically Intergeneric hybrids with Oncidium, miltonia, brassia and probably a few others, but the culture is about the same). I agree that that method of potting probably isn't ideal, my main worry is that there probably aren't any drainage holes in that pot. Oncidiums do like plenty of water during the growing season, but you can water a bit less when it is dormant.

First, welcome to the Board!

Your instincts are correct, both of these are from the Oncidium group (intergeneric hybrids - parentage comes from several closely-related genera)

These do like to be kept on the moist side, but also need airflow. So the solid glass vase is not good - when you water, you need to do it so that water runs through the plant (not just spritz) So unless you're into drilling holes in glass (there are some notes on the Board on how to safely do that), move them to a plastic or clay pot with good drainage.

I picked these too. I repotted both into small grade bark and so far they’re doing well for me. I potted one in a clear plastic slotted pot (it had bad roots so I wanted to be able to monitor them) and the other in a clay pot. I water whenever the media approaches dryness. Drainage and aeration of the root zone are very important for long term health. I think you’ll be fighting an uphill battle to keep them in vases.
