Default How to pot Cymbidium goeringii

Hello all,

I just recently acquired a Cym. goeringii. It was an imported plant in moss in a bag and I would like to know the best way to pot it. Currently, it is in double spike and I have one of those black cylindrical cymbidium pots for it. Should I use moss or bark mix?

"The plant" does not determine how it should be potted. Your growing conditions and watering habits, coupled with the properties of the medium, determine how well it meets the needs of the plant.

That said, I used to import about 500 "Chinese" cymbidiums a month, and they arrived bare-root, in-spike, and all immediately went into semi-hydroponics. Never lost a one, or a flower.

My C. goeringii are in different mixes. One is in a peat based mix, I assume it's just straight up promix. I've had it several years and it came in that mix, but is doing well. I've got another plant in standard bark based orchid mix with some sphag mixed in. It's also blooming well.

In the past I've received some bare root C. goeringii in the fall. They formed flower buds, but the buds dried up, probably due to stress from import and shipping. If that happens, don't despair. They'll bloom the following year, if not the following spring.

I pot them in the tradtional Japanese Cymbidium potting mix which is composed of 3 kinds of pumices (kanuma, akadama, and satsuma). I have struggle with Cymbidium goeringii for many years. Finally I figure it out. Once all my Cymbidium goeringii are potted into this mix, every single one grows like weeds and the ones that set buds in the fall, all bloomed in the following spring.
