Smile Black hard roots on my Paph. Are they dead?

Hi everyone,

I noticed small roots growing at the base of the leaves on my paph. I repotted it to get those roots in the potting media as I know they need the moisture to survive. On the root system there were 4 nice fat brown firm roots and two black roots. The black roots were soft and soggy about 1/4 of the way up the root, but 3/4 of the root was still firm. My question is are these black firm roots dead? I trimmed off the soggy part only. As always thank you for your time and help.

I would suspect that the hard black roots are dead.
