Default Free light meter iphone app

For those of you out there with Iphones ( I can't live without mine apparently) theres a free App called "Light Meter". Its actually for photographers however you can set it to give you a footcandle reading by utilizing the phones camera lens. I ran into it while trying to figure out what lighting to go with for my orchidarium project. I believe it to be fairly accurate based on comparisons I made between it and my DSLR. Also, just to satisfy my own curiosity, I held it one foot away from one black candle in a pitch black black room and low and behold... 1.03 foot candles. Just thought it may be usefull to some of you curious about your light levels without access to the real deal.

Willie.

WHere did you get this app? I searched for 'light meter app' and got many hits. The ones I looked at did not show foot candles.

Y'all need to go read about light meters before jumping off the bridge. This is reflected light meter as is the one in your camera. What you want is an incident light meter. Yes there are some tricks to estimate incident light from reflected light, but they are rough and unreliable. For example, suppose you had a black flower (or dark table top) that you wanted to measure the light hitting it. Since black absorbs all light (and anything dark most of it) the reflected reading is very low even when the incident light is very high.

If you use this meter you need to know how to estimate incident light from the reading you get. In order to do that you will need to know the aperture that your phone camera used in the measurement and the shutter speed it recommended. I've never seen a phone camera that supplied exposure data but maybe there is one.

Things are not always as simple as they seem.
