How well would that work with, lets say, my Florida midday sun? Middle of July?

That way, I could use it to figure out what percentage of shade cloth is best fo my uise.

This free iphone pocket light meter can be set to give candle feet and luxes by turning on the additional information setting.
Pocket Light Meter for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch (4th generation), iPad 2 Wi-Fi, and iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G on the iTunes App Store
Prior to this app, I used my dslr camera and a white sheet of paper to estimate candle feet. This is much easier and has been giving similar numbers. I still hold the white sheet of paper where the leaves are and point iPhone at it until it gives a reading.

Could someone help me to interpret my reading?

EV160: 9.56
EV100: 8.88

Time 1/100
Aperture f/2.5
ISO 160

Edit: I found here:

Quote:
The light meter (exposure meter) doesn't measure lumens. And incident meter reading can be converted to Lux which is Lumen/m^2. To do the conversion take an incident reading and convert it to EV value @ ISO100. and then use the following formula to convert to Lux. Lux= 2^EV * 2.5
So my question becomes, do I use the EV160 or EV100 number?

@EV100 = 1,178 Lux
@EV160 = 1,887 Lux

???

Another option is to enter the readings into First Ray's online calculator that converts them to foot candles and lux: Light Intensity Measurement
The AOS culture sheets give foot candle recommendations for different types here: AOS Culture Sheets

MQ GreenThumb is light meter app for plants that does the calculations for you. If you tap on the word, "foot-candle" or "lux" the calculation swaps between the two.

That's great. I must get that app! Sounds perfect. The app I have was trying to up-sell me to a fancy light meter attachment.

I've been considering this one for my android phone:

beeCam Light Meter is a incident-light meter application.

This app can measure the exposure without influence of the reflectivity of subject.
The accuracy of measurements depends on the sensor of your phone.

thanks for the thread and the new info, all!

Since that formula relies on the EV value @ ISO100 I would think you use the EV100 value... ?
