Default Naming a Hybrid thru RHS

Im a feeling to name a hybrid that I am about to bloom for the 1st time. I looked all thru AOS awards and the RHS registry using Orchid Roots and can not find this hybrid has been named

C. alaorii has been the seed

C Angels Fantasy as the pod.

This is a Peter T Lin plant and the pod parent was awarded in 2004. C. Angels Fantasy "Solar Flare".

Mine will be C . Solar Eclipse 2024. Hope it opens all the way tomorrow bec I need to send a pic to the RHS..

Now the pod parent and the seed have been reversed and this one is named.

C Angels Fantasy as the seed

C. alaorii has been the pod.

It is C Tiny Fantasy. Cattleya Tiny Fantasy

I am only assuming I have a new hybrid.

gonna play peek a boo with you 1st

The name is the same no matter which is the pod parent. If C. alaorii x C. Angel's Fantasy already has a name, reversing the order of the parents will lead to progeny with the same name.

Fred Clarke sells a lot of unnamed crosses, since he is always experimenting. Of the various SVO plants you have, surely there are some that haven't been registered. Just ask first, but Fred is usually quite willing to let someone else name one of his crosses - he has so many, he can't register them all.

ditto to Roberta, if you did not make the cross, the appropriate thing to do is to contact the hybridizer and ask for permission to name. often they will say yes, but with their name as the hybridizer.

I believe the etiquette is that if you performed a good faith search for the breeder, and could not find him/her, then naming it would be appropriate. I'm sure this policy is not always adhered to...

PS Please don't name anything after me unless it's highly fragrant (in a good way.)

Correct. When you can't reach the originator (term used by the RHS), you should indicate in the application what you have tried to reach them.
