Ecuagenera summer sale - Orchid Board

Discovered yesterday, the same day that I received a June order from Ecuagenera that they are having a summer sale this weekend. Couldn't fight the temptation - and ordered again... this time Stanhopea embreei and also a Cattleya iricolor that I had always wanted (not mention some aroids, as well.)

Has anyone here purchased their flasks? What are they like?

I was happy with the larger plants from them, including Cattleya iricolor. Even some of the large plants arrived with heat damage in transit. That can't be avoided this time of year.

A Masdevallia I ordered arrived dead and they never responded to my messages. If you peruse the Vendor Feedback section you will find this is standard for them.

In this hot season I would not order any small plants, and I would not order any cool growers.

I figure the large plants are such great buys it is worth the lottery of losing a plant or two.

Ordering this time of year is a calculated risk, for sure - but 30% off now is a solid enticement. Both the Oncidium lindeyoides and the Gongora quinquenervis that arrived yesterday did indeed show signs of heat stress as well as shriveling of the pseudobulbs - hopefully my "rehydration campaign" as well as more amenable temps will help them bounce back.

Got it. It sounds like a flask would end up being a well shaken melted mess.
What season are the orchids in in Equidor?

The issues is US temperatures. Their growing areas aren't as hot as it gets here because they're at some elevation, despite being very close to the Equator. They ship in bulk from Ecuador to Florida, then repackage to individual boxes. If you're in Mississippi I would order flasks in late Fall or early Spring. They might be willing to let you buy now and hold the shipment, if you are able to reach somebody there.

I've found ordering from South American vendors is best in spring. The plants are usually just going to sleep and will hopefully have a reduced dormancy and wake up early enough in summer to get a decent growing season in. Some vendors (i.e. Bela Vista) will only ship highly seasonal plants (e.g. Catasetums) in spring since that is when they have the best chance for survival.
