L. rubesence var 'oscuro'
By Washington at 2011-12-01 03:21
I purchased a L. rubesence var 'oscuro' in December of 2010 from Hamlyn Orchids. i was told that the plant only bloomed once per year which was a bit disappointed to hear as the flowers were very dainty. i got the plant mounted on fern bark and it had 5 pseudobulbs with 2 inflorescence. i placed it in my greenhouse that is constructed out of 50 % shade cloth and after loosing almost half of my collection to rain i covered the top of the greenhouse with PVC plastic. the plant was hanged from the top of the greenhouse where it received sun all day however, it got good air movement. The flowers eventually faded and the new growth started, it was very slow growing, i know it was growing but i couldn't see the difference when i looked at it each week for the first 3 months. Over time the beautiful green leaves started to emerge from from the two pseudobulbs that were blooming, now i had three growths. i fertilize once per week with Jack's Classic bloom booster 3-9-6 and SUPERtrive and water 2 more times for the week. over time i could see the development of the new pseudobulbs and they were larger than the last. In the early part of September i started to see spikes appearing on the new growths and they continue to grow and buds developed. By mid November the flowers started to open and WOW it was a beauty.
