Review:
lora's Orchids with Consultants Ned Nash and Isobyl La Croix. This book is endorsed by the American Orchid Society, and with good reason. With 355 pages, not including index, you get 1,300 all color photos of orchids, and descriptions of 1,500. This book's pictures are amazing! I love them. Professional pictures on almost, if not every page. There are the standard beginner's sections discussing what orchids are, where they come from, where they are found in nature, their history, cultivation tips, propagation techniques, and a quick overview of pests and their control. There is lots of juicy information in these first 50-60 odd pages for beginners. I don't have the point of view of a non beginner so please forgive me. The remaining book is dedicated to the description of hundreds of orchid genuses and then broken down to specific species care. You will drool over these pages, and you will want to read each and every last description. They describe size, optimal conditions, and even flower color in each species description. The species list is written in alphabetical order and is not divided up into alliances, which to me is plus. Hybrids and artificial genus are treated the same way as natural genus. If you are a beginner to this world of orchids then you will definitely enjoy this book. It will provide you with at least two days of novice joy, and then you can go back to it time and time again to wear out that new book smell. The book is hard covered, thank god! And it comes with a nice hard book case to protect it. It's definitely worth the money you invest in getting it. The ISBN # is 0-88192-721-X, use this to find it in any bookstore or on the web. Happy reading!
