Ren. Nancy Chandler "Red Dragon"
By Heron Wing at 2012-04-10 15:14
I am very new to this website, but I've been happily growing orchids for over ten years now. About six years ago I purchased a Ren. Nancy Chandler 'Red Dragon' both because I have a *thing* about the way vandaceous orchids look, and because I saw another one in flower - what a beauty!

I am a complete newbie to this website, but I have been successfully growing and reflowering many orchid species for over ten years now. I just went to an orchid show at Longwood Gardens in PA about three weeks ago and purchased an Elleanthus capitatus after seeing a picture of what it will do when it flowers.

Oh,ehy !
I just received two superb Vandas, but I am kind of new on the topic and I don't know how care about them properly. They came in a glass bowl,no bark,no media, just roots+air.
Question no.1 : Should I pot them ? If yes,what media am I to use?What pot ?
Question no.2 : How should I water the plants if I leave them stay in their glass bowls?

By Peraj at 2012-03-31 14:17
I just read one of the very popular conversations on this site about growing Phal, Catt, Den and some other orchids in water (2008). http://www.orchidboard.com/community/semi-hydroponic-culture/14449-phala...

I couldnt stop myslef sharing some ideas and asking a question in this regards:

brown spot on Phalaenopsis
By orchids321 at 2012-02-01 00:53
I have a large brown spot on a leaf of one of my phalaenopsis. Should I cut of off or leave it alone. Plus I noticed a few bumps on some of the bottom leaves which looks like water bubbles. Does anyone know what they are. I'll try to post a picture of the problem.

I have a phalaenopsis orchid that the bottom leaf is red on the edges and has turned yellow its about two feet away from a south facing window and the phalaenopsis orchids on either side seem to be fine ..not sure how to add the picture but I do have one.

I purchased a L. rubesence var 'oscuro' in December of 2010 from Hamlyn Orchids. i was told that the plant only bloomed once per year which was a bit disappointed to hear as the flowers were very dainty. i got the plant mounted on fern bark and it had 5 pseudobulbs with 2 inflorescence.

Apartment Gardening – Whether A Boon or Not?
By androwsymond at 2011-01-20 12:34
Gardening in an apartment usually means growing houseplants and perhaps a pot of tomatoes or herb plants on a balcony. Herb plants have many uses, right from garnishing recipes, to curing certain infections and illnesses to adding an aesthetic look to the garden. Many people want to have their own garden, but without a worthy piece of land to start a garden is almost impossible.

Cold and Wet

With cold weather here to stay for the next three months or so, it is time to make sure we protect our prize plants from cold air. One sure way to infect your orchid with fungus is to it to them get wet and then allow them to get cold.

Some of the different ways to grow Phals- Bark, Mounted, Semi-Hydro, Sphagnum moss, and CHC
By Call_Me_Bob at 2010-10-25 02:58
Most phalaenopsis are epiphytes. Epiphytes are plants that live clinging to other plants, mainly trees. Phalaenopsis have thick fleshy roots that attach them selves to the bark. Because of this, they cannot be grown as traditional house plants. They needs fast draining media that allows for good aeration within the roots. There are many different ways of potting a Phalaenopsis.

A Quick guide to Phalaenopsis
By Call_Me_Bob at 2010-10-25 02:53
Let me first say that I am, by no mean, and expert. There are exceptions

Phalaenopsis are the most common orchid. They can be found in upscale flower and gardening shops, as well as in most grocery stores. Contrary to popular belief, with the proper care, Phalaenopsis can be easy to grow and to make bloom.
