Nice setup! I also happened to notice a few tags in there from Cloud's! Which Bulbo did you get?

No bulbos - just not a fan, and they were too expensive for the number of plants I was buying during that visit. I bought from Cloud's one lycaste (deciduous hybrid), one gongora, four stans, one doritis and way too many catts, epidendrums and encyclias. The rest are on my aeroponic wall, I have a post about it in Member Displays.

Everyone, thanks for all the thumbs up. This was a pretty sophisticated project, involving careful templating of the window spaces, undercuts on the shelf because it had to be tilted at 30 degrees to fit into the space, reinforcement of the front and back edges, creating a precisely cut foam core to save on the weight (the 9-foot shelf weighs only about 80 lbs (37 kg) empty), and cutting out the film-covered styrofoam to mold the recess in the top.

As I said before, I could have and should have put in a heating cable between the foam core and the top surface, but I didn't think of it at the time. I will probably create a similar design, but much smaller windowsill covers for my other plant friendly windows, and those will be heated.

Here are a few more photos of the shelf setup.

Very nice shelf! Hey how do you care for your vandas? I'm always wanting to learn new tricks for growing vandas indoors (not for me, more for giving advice when people ask at the shows). Thanks!

Once every couple of days, I put it in a plastic square basin and soak it in a weak fertilizer solution for about 20-30 min. The rest of the time, I'm a compulsive mister - I spray the roots and all sides of the basket twice a day. It was dropping leaves like crazy when I first got it home, bare root, and ever since I put it in the basket with lava rock, sphagnum and CHC, it stopped dropping leaves and started growing a new leaf and new roots.

Sounds like a good routine. Thanks!

Excellent set-up!!!! Wow I wish I had a nice long window like that that I could use!! My huge window is on the west side of the house and gets HAMMERED with very hot afternoon sun in summer. So it's frustrating. Seeing yours all nice makes me jealous! ha ha!!
