Olympic Orchids May 2021
I saw a number of Grammatophyllum hybrids at Olympic Orchids a few weeks ago, so I ordered them. I wound up with five different ones. They are in the bottom row in the photo. Olympic plants mostly arrive in 2" / 5cm pots, in fresh long-fiber sphagnum. The mounted plant next to them is Cadetia taylori.
I've also been buying tiny Oncidium mericlones from Ellen over the last couple of years. With these new arrivals I have almost three dozen different ones. The largest in the photo is Onc. Heaven Scent 'Sweet Baby.' Its pot has the most flash glare of the plants in the photo. I ordered a $2 'Ugly Orchid Special' and got this. It has a few spots on one leaf, but is otherwise a nice plant.
The plant in a potting soil mixture is a free companion plant, in this case Hatiora salicornioides, an epiphytic cactus. It will grow nicely alongside orchids. I have one already growing in water in a wine bottle. I'm hoping this is a different clone, because they are self-infertile. I like to set seed and contribute it to the Seed Depot at the Cactus and Succulent Society of America.
The plant with leaves poking up the farthest toward the top is Cymbidium rectum, a hot-growing Cym from Southeast Asia. I've never seen it before. It has stiff leaves, as stiff as Cym. aloifolium.

Enjoy your new treat Estacion and keep posting update about it!
Ugly Orchid Special? seriously? hahaha ...is it because they are ugly flowers or damage plants? They all look great.

Well the box arrived. It looks like the usps guy rode it here and then crashed into my porch....
I hope the babies are okay!

They're packed pretty well, in layers of newspaper. Sphagnum in pots squashes well and doesn't harm roots thereby.
Most of the time I water them heavily on arrival. For things like Gramms I soak the sphagnum. I put mine on the concrete slab in the sunroom, in a puddle of water.

Great Vendor!
I placed my first order with Olympic Orchids about a month ago. The plants were impressive. They were only 2" size, but every plant was pristine and beautiful. I also ordered the "Ugly Orchid Special." It had a few spots on the leaves, but overall looked much better than most plants I have bought from other vendors that weren't discounted. Highly recommend.

Great Vendor. Great prices (gotta love the $3 specials). Plants arrive in great condition, a lot better than some other vendors, Only 2 things I wish. More Species, and an e mail confirming the order, tracking report would be great also. Ellen seems like a super nice person I wrote her one time because I got no order confirmation and she e mailed right back the next day. Very nice person. I was a little skeptical at first cause the low prices, but I highly recommend them and they are legit.
