Default Elsner Orchideen in Germany is closed for good

For the folks that live in Europe, I'm sad to report that Elsner Orchideen in Germany has closed permanently. Regina is retiring and repsumable there was no one to take over the nursery, and all remaining stock has been transferred to Asendorfer Orchideenzucht.

Very sad news, the plants were always top notch, customer service was excellent, and it was the only place I knew of that had a good selection of Catasetinae hybrids imported from SVO. If I had known about the closure earlier I would have made one last order!

I got to meet her in February at the show in Vienna, she was present at Asendorfer's stand and had some leftovers from her stock, from which I bought some things I would later have regretted not buying. A very nice lady.

Too bad the veterans are giving up making way to Asian clones' merchants, sellers, filling our collections up on viruses but at least doing it cheaply.

(I did bought a Cattleya trianae last year that is actually a mislabeled Cattleya Sea Breeze , very disappointing).

Unfortunately, that seems to be the way of the world.

Being an orchid plant vendor is a labor of love, with not a great deal of financial compensation, unless you can do it on a large scale.

Plus, there seem to be fewer and fewer "younger" folks willing to make that commitment.

I loved my greenhouse full of plants, and was always quite excited to get more in, many of which were destined for resale. However, when I decided to give that up, it was something of a relief.

Haven't encountered that company before - but hats off to the owner(s). Definitely sounds like they are great orchid business operators with great service.

In their retirement time, there's one thing for sure ----- is that nobody will need to teach them how to look after their home orchids!
