Default Learn something new...

I belong to the Volusia County Orchid society and we had Martin Motes come to the meeting bringing some beautiful vandas. He gave his lecture on warm growing vandas, the one that he did at the 18th WOC 2005 in Dijon France, and I seem to always learn something new. I brought in Aerv. Kinnarree ‘Redland Gold’ AM/AOS and it had begun to twist. He gave me a small tidbit that I needed to turn the plant so that the axis of the leaves run east to west. I never thought that it would make a difference but according to him, the plant will seek the sun where it gets the most sunlight on it leaves. I went home and went out to the shade room and noticed that he was right. I didn't have many turned the wrong way but the ones that were, were twisting in the basket.

Here is my pic of my Aerv.:

P.S. This orchid is very fragrant....it knocks me over in the morning when I go out to the shade room

Wally, does that go for all 'chids or was it specific to the type you brought in? Very interesting, thanks for sharing And that is a stunning bloom! Wow!

Digging way deep down into my memory, I seem to remember something about phototropism!

I haven't heard that word in a few years. My head is swooning!

I am not sure about all orchids but I would think so. I know if I grow my phals next to the window, the leaves will tilt toward the window. With vandas, I never thought about it until after Martin told me and I went out and seen with my own eyes that it was happening. So, you know what I was doing next morning, taking the hangers off and re-orientating them so they were the right way. Not too many but of course, it was the ones that are in the back of the room...LOL
