Is it possible at all to maintain a Vanda in the home. Obviously most people cannot live if a house with 85% humidity, but if you run a Wal-Mart cool mist humidifier in a fairly small sunroom and spritz them twice a day, could that work? I just want one plant with five foot long roots because they look so cool.

Sounds good to me give it a try. My humidity and my house is to cold so I don't grow them. But the roots are vert cool looking.

I'm trying with a seedling (because I am a fool) , so I will let you know how it goes! I've had it about 5 months, so far I'd say it's doing ok (daily to every other day showers, misting every day - I do have some sphag in the basket to provide some humidity around the roots). We'll see...

Now you got me thinking! I'm a fool as well but we won't know unless we try. Some folks here have done the vase culture thing with success. When you hear from them inspiration will follow. Good luck.

They're not hard in a home, but you're not going to have long dangling roots without high humidity. They need several hours of direct sun through a window, and a fan on them when the sun is on the leaves so they don't sunburn.

Spraying roots once or twice a day isn't enough water. In a low-humidity home you will need to soak the roots in water for several hours every day or two. Maybe get some macrame hangings for your dangling fixation and grow the Vandas in a different manner.

They are warm-loving plants. The blue-flowered ones tolerate cooler temperatures, but Vandas prefer much warmer temperatures throughout the year than most people have in their home.

Vase culture is your friend if you want to grow Vanda indoors. Place the Vanda into a vase that is large enough to accommodate the roots. To water, fill the vase up to the vase of the plant with water, or a very weak fertilizer solution, and let it be for an hour or so. Then drain all the liquid from the vase. Wait until the roots are all white before watering again.

If you want less work, net pots, the ones used for hydroponics, with 80% bark mixed with 20% sphagnum moss also work very well.

Either way, the most important thing when it comes to water vanda is to wait until the roots are all white, then water until they are solid green.
