Default Vdnps. Pulcherrimin

(Phal. pulcherrima x V. miniata)

This is a beautiful clone that was registered in 1971 from the University of Hawaii. I asked my Manhattan orchid collector where she got it: it was cloned by a grower in Florida in the late 60’s she said. It is well suited for windowsill culture. In the late 1950s and 1960s quite a number of breeders tried crossing Phals with Vandas. A couple of people I know had some bad experience with Vandaenopsis that was the main reason I was skeptical in taking care of one. But I am very intrigued by the color of the flowers and how they look dainty but robust. This plant started opening its blooms a month ago and it is just now that I took a photo and posted it. The tip of the spike is still producing blooms.
I had this two years ago as a three year old seedling. I give it Phalaenopsis culture but a slight brighter light on the southwest window hanging in a 4-inch basket in Phalaenopsis mix. I water it once a week but doused under a sink for a couple of minutes until its dripping wet. It loves the New York humidity in summers. I am quite surprised that this orchid plant is not high maintenance at all.
A true Vandaenopsis is hard to find that’s why I grabbed this plant immediately as soon as I saw it.

The colouring is great. It has a nice habit too. Good growing.

Interested to know what issues people had with vandaenopsis?

Thank you for your kind encouragements.

Most issues I encountered : whether to use a Vanda culture or a Phalaenopsis culture and people just managed to complicate themselves.

One of the first attempts was Asconopsis Irene Dobkin, which was bred between Phalaenopsis Doris and Asctm miniatum. It has a beautiful flower, but the plant is impossible to grow (I have killed at least 5).

When someone manages to keep it alive, it does not grow leaves in a regular Vanda or Phalaenopsis shape, it sends leaves out in every direction, sort of looking like Medusa's head.

The flower shown is gorgeous. I have a couple, which were bred with Doritis pulcherrima, var chumpornensis, which produces an entirely different flower (flower on the right).

Flower on the left is left is Asconopsis Yih-Cheng Amanda, which is an interesting mix of species:
([Dor pulcherrima x Phal parishii] x Asctm miniatum)

Nice one Bud, love the color.

Kim, both are very pretty. I was looking at one like on the right. Question, are yours hard to grow and bloom? I sure can see why these crosses would be hard to figure out what they might like. There probably confused as well
