Wire for Vanda?
Default Wire for Vanda?

Hello everyone

I bought a Vanda a year ago and the plastic basket that it came in has finally given up the ghost! The sun and elements made it brittle and it just disintegrated.

The roots are very long so I just wrapped one of the wires around the stalk at the point just underneath the last bottom set of leaves.

I don't know if this is correct or if it might hurt the plant. I've searched for a tutorial on YouTube but cannot seem to find what I'm looking for. I would so appreciate your help on this.

I tried to gently put the roots through the slats of a wood basket, but they are too long and have many projections. I also tried a plastic basket that I sort of cut to accommodate the root system but that didn't work either, and I fear breaking those precious roots!

Can I just leave it hung like that with the wire wrapped around it's stalk? Heeelllppppp!

Thanks a million!

I've seen lots of photos of people growing Vandas like that. I seem to recall seeing photos on both RF Orchids' and Motes Orchids' Web sites, and they both breed and grow lots of Vandas.

If you water it daily, you can grow it hanging on a wire.

Otherwise, wet the roots well to make them pliable. Then gently curl them around the inside of a large basket.
Finally, fill basket with mix of your choice. I use mix of spaghnum & bark (abt 2:1).
