Chiloschista viridiflava - Orchid Board

This orchid plant is endemic to Thailand….My culture for this orchid plant: temperatures of hot to warm; bright diffused light but not direct sun on the south facing window directly above the oscillating fan/humidifier.
I inherited this mounted in a plastic mesh wrapped around coconut fibers with dying flowers in a long spike (dead spike still on); but after a year this gave me merely three fragrant flowers (if you put your nose near the flowers you can smell a whiff of wild berries) but the blooms this time are bigger and with much vivid colors.
This kind of orchid plant requires high humidity.
During growing season in the summer, I increase watering frequency and reduce watering and fertilizer during the winter rest periods (not a drastic rest period but a two day intervals of no water)…. Since this is mounted this must be watered regularly…. and let the roots dry out between watering.
I thought this was already dead by the wrinkly grayish roots last winter….yet spring came and the roots turned green once again when watered and it gave me a spike. Last May, I put it outdoors on the fire escape shaded by the large Vandas.
Notice the butterfly eggs on the spike, for after a week they hatched and the caterpillars ate all the flowers and were gone.

Cute little one. One of those leafless orchids,yes? But I'd like to know if you plan on keeping the mount as is. I have 2 different orchids mounted the same way from Ooi Leng Sun and bloom and grow well but don't know if they should be kept that way.Whatcha think,Bud?

Yes, this is one of the leafless orchids. It is thriving in its mount and have accustomed to my environment. I have to remount it at some point in the future and I will still use the plastic mesh but give it a fresh coconut fiber. Note: the roots has to be exposed to air and light since there are no leaves to do what other plants do to produce food and energy for itself.
Trust your instincts, follow the culture and observe if the media has decayed= then its time to remount.

Nice one mate! I have a Chiloschista lunifera in double spike for the first time so seeing yours is definitely giving me something to look forward to.

Post pictures of your lunifera....don't move it from its place until it opens its blooms=you don't want it to blast....
