Default Rhy gigantea 'Big Spot x Spotty'

I've been waiting a long time to see if this rescue would make it...

Susanne, I'm completely envious right now. If only I could find a rescue plant like this somewhere nearby. The two spikes on my gigantea var. alba are still--SLOWLY!!!--elogating. It was labeled as a spotted variety when I bought it a few years ago as an unbloomed seedling. Looking at the lovely flowers on your plant, I think it's time that I go back online and find an actual spotted-flowered variety this time! Very nice rescue you made with this one.

Steve

To clarify things, this plant (and another Rhy gigantea 'Paige Spot x Spotty') that is still not doing anything) were part of the plants my friend Ron gave me when he was ill, it's not a store rescue. Ron passed away in early December and this plant produced a spike on that same day, as have a few others he gave me
I know he's keeping an eye on things down here

I'm sorry for your loss. I'm sure that plant is very special to you. I guess I'm a very sentimental person because I treasure things like that. Congratulations on the save.

Is that mounted on cork and then hung vertically in a wooden basket. I like the concept.

A large part of my collection came from Ron...and I am honored that he entrusted me with his beautiful orchids. They all mean something special to me.

This plant came to me in an 8" basket with nothing in it. The spike on this is only a few inches long and because the basket is so big, I braced the spike with a piece of cork to raise it up. I read that they don't like thier roots disturbed so I didn't want to do anything out of the ordinary to it before I confirmed that i could get it to bloom.

That is an exceptional flower. Ron must indeed be smiling down on you!
All 3 of mine are blooming, but my spotted one has decided to become a peach variety, so I'll be on the lookout for a spotty myself!
Great job Sue!
