Default Vascostylis Crownfox Magic

This is the first time any of my vandas are flowering!

When I got the greenhouse I finally felt that I could care for hanging vandas and got myself a few. I've been eagerly watching for developing spikes, and finally found one on the Vascostylis a couple of months ago. Now 14 flowers have opened and there are still a few closed buds.

I'm a bit disappointed about the flower size. I'm guessing the average flower size is 2-3cm. Could be normal. I'm also slightly disappointed in the coloring. I was hoping the blue would be more blue and even though it is by far the 'bluest' coloration I've got in the greenhouse, it's still fairly lilac.

But, I'm thrilled that I managed to make this plant flower and I'm hoping the rest of the vandas will follow suit!

Since I'm fiddling and playing around with pollination and want to try some home flasking, I decided to pollinate the Vasco with a NOID phal. Just for the fun of it.

I hope your pollination takes, and congratulations on your first (non-phalaenopsis) vandaceous blooms!

Rhynchostylis has very small flowers compared to e.g. Vanda, as do the Ascocentrums. I guess in this cross, the smaller flowered plants are winning in the phenotype of your flowers!

p.s. your cross would then be a NOID Himoriara

Congrats on the blooming. Hopefully the rest of your vandas will follow suit. The photo is lovely.

Your Phal. NO ID looks just like my Phal. Be Tris. What do you think?

Gosh, you're right! That is very, very close! No one of the phals sold in nurseries in Namibia come with name tags on, so I've kept them all as NOIDS and have not even spent any time or effort in trying to seek out names based on appearance (except in the beginning before I learnt about NOIDs).

This one is a bit different than most of the others though...both in shape and coloration, and perhaps especially the shape and positioning of the lip. I do like it! And it's been flowering non-stop for half a year or so, so it was a good purchase.

Thank you all.

Himoriara...well, at least it's possible to pronounce it without too much tongue twisting and stuttering.

First pollination did not take. I'm trying again.
