I think it partly depends on your light. If vandas are warm and have quite a bit of light they keep growing.

Its a number of things, essentially the plant always decides what it wants to do with the pleasant conditions its being given. Ironic.

Yea it seems that some plants like Phals you can induce them to spike by changing the temperature. if there is a 50 deg F (10c) in the day to night temperature, they will spike. which makes them very commercially viable as they can flower them all year round. Some plants will flower after they get more than 12 hours of darkness per day. but as far as i know, with Vandas, the only trigger is to keep them happy and they will flower.

Also bromeliads with flower when they come in contact with ethylene gas, a plant hormone that bananas give off. (This will make orchid flowers "Ripen" or die very quickly)

Interesting....I guess that's why a hand of bananas ripen quicker than when you have the seperate & apart from each other.

Yes, sure is, and they will help ripen avocados as well

I think that humidity was my problem. Our winters here are very humid, so I was over watering without realizing it.
With the vandas that I have in baskets in sphag and charcoal, it's easy to know when they are dry.

A true statement; only problem is that Sphagnum moss is my arch nemesis. Lol

Sphagnum if used corectly is great. In our climate I find that it keeps some plant too moist, but if they are in a basket with good air movement it works great. In a phal pot if it packs down it can cause problems.

That was my bad experience; with phals. Everytime I get phals now I repot immediately and half the time the roots are horrible!
