Vandas in Glass Vases

Update on my Ascocenda miniatum which is kept in a vase ...it has a spike! I bought this in april 2008 it flowered twice summer/autumn that year. In the winter of 2008/2009 I left it in someones care for a couple of months. It grew 2 stunted leaves & lost one in the middle of the plant (I believe it was not watered everyday)
Well after another year & alot of TLC it's leaves are back to growing 'normally' and as said above it's in spike. Next thing is to get it to flower more than once this year. Here are a couple pics the one with the flower dates from the flowering in 2008.The other 2 are taken today.

Just picked up a Vascostylis Pine Rivers and a Vasco Viboon Velvet 'Perfection' while on vacation on Kaua'i - we ran into an orchid show and I went a little nuts. Had them shipped, and they did ok - a little dry since getting here (I'm in SF) and this seems like an ideal way to keep those roots going.

The Vasco Viboon is roots only in a plastic basket, the Viboon Velvet is in media with a ton of extra roots - going to have to look for a really large vase for that one!

One place I'd check for vases and containers are thrift stores, the Salvation army, and goodwill - there's always lots of glassware for sale there.

I was tempted by one being sold this way quite recently, but it wasn't for sale as they were taking it to a show the next day.

I bought a potted one instead and so I'm now seeing how it goes in that

A lot of websites in the UK seem to sell them in a vase. They claim it's a good way to grow them but I have no personal experience.

i can't tell you how much you have helped me with my vandas. i want to grow them in glass vases but did not know how. you solved my problem.

i just have one question. wouldn't the vanda get more humidity if it had a little wet moss, or water on rocks at the bottom? the reason i ask is i live in las vegas, nv and the humity even in the winter is not much ubove 40 degrees.

I too am interested in the status updates for these plants that have been grown this way. I suppose, one way or another, this is how I'll be growing my first and only Vanda, as in Colorado we have very low humidity.

I bought a dozen large plastic vases with a small neck at a wholesale flower distributor for a beach party., (no glass). If anyone is looking for large vases at a good price I suggest you try that. Bett

Hey,

My Sansai Blue was bought in flower in november, the spike died off and i carried on as normal with the vase watering.

As i said i water every other day, adding food to each feeding. Skipping it once a week or fortnight.

i am happy to say its back in spike, in fact in flower now, so hopefully with a bit of luck it will spike again before christmas!
