Yeah, his stuff is very dried out. I have a few still growing from him, but still nothing's blooming.

Thanks for a very interesting idea. Afraid I have some questions ( I apologised but I am new to orchids, and have inherited my Grandfather Vanda Blue Magic).
1) I currently soak the roots for 15 mins a day in the morning, then put the Vanda back in a huge bay window that receives all day sunshine. Should I continue to do this when I move it to a Vase?
2) How about leaving some moist Sphagnum moss at the bottom of the vase? Especially in summer?
3) I read another article about Vanda's roots growing into a bucket of water, which resulting in only having to water it once a week!! If I left an inch of water at the bottom and the root tips grow into it, would it be ok?

Sorry, but I don't want to lose the orchid, so want to be a little surer on what I'm doing!

Welcome poppy86orchids,
My house is dry enough that if I were to try to grow bare-root vandas hanging in bay windows I would need to soak at least 2 times a day. I have a Mokara is a vase that I have forgot about for a week or two with no water and it has not resented me for it, so during warm weather it will appreciate a watering every couples days with fert, it wont hurt it if you don't. As far as sphagnum, I would advise against putting sphagnum in the bottom of the vase it would promote rot, if worried in very warm weather I would leave a little (.5-1.0 cm) of water in the bottom. I've done this a few times and the roots on the bottom did not rot away, they kept growing just fine.Hope this helped!

That has helped me alot, thank you.
Right, I'm off to sneak Mum's lerge vase out of the cupboard! I can't get out to buy one at mo, due to loads of surgery on my knee!
I don't have a plastic basket though... Nan said when the orchid arrived, it only had a wire around it. She then tried to pot, which I quickly removed!
But I have found these wooden baskets. Could I put that on top of the vase with the orchid?
Does it need Sphagnum moss at all then? Other people seem to recommend it?
I apologise for all the questions.
But I'm very grateful.

I have a Brassolaelia "Yellow Bird" that was quite overgrown and needed repotting, so I decided to have a go at the vase method of culture. I removed the old bark, wrapped some sphagnum around the base of the plant (to act as a plug to keep it upright), and rigged up a sort of a wire basket to hold it up in its jar. I fill the jar with water each week up to the sphagnum, and let it sit for half an hour before emptying all but an inch at the bottom- it doesn't touch the roots at all, but presumably provides some humidity. After 4 weeks, the plant is going crazy, putting out roots all over the place!

This might seem to be a stupid question. Considering water added to the vase then emptied to give humidity to vanda roots, some mineral will be left behind when leftover water evaporates leaving crust. How do you clean that to make the glass vase clean and shiny?

I put mine in the dishwasher..and it gets rid of it.
If you don't have one then you can scrub it off by hand, doesn't need much elbow grease.

I'm a bit confused...do you empty the vase but leave the Vanda in the vase?? Or do you remove the vanda from the vase completely?

Lovely plant, you've done great!

I empty the vase and leave the vanda in it. I will try to post another photo showing the whole plant with the jar so you can get a better idea.
