I like mine in baskets with sphag and large lumps of charcoal because it holds some moisture and it is very dry here in the summer. It also saves some space because I can hang them. I do have a vasco, renanstylis and rhychocentrum in vases. They are small.

I have no other options for growing it since the climate here is very hot and dry and needs watering and misting all the time. I am thinking of potting it up in large bark.

Does it get enough light? My Robert's Delight bloomed with direct sun from morning until 1 pm. Her leaves had lots of black freckles on one side that was facing the sun.
Your plant looks nice and healthy.

Here in Cyprus we have sun for 360 days a year, so light isn't a problem. Lack of humidity is an issue, I think I might try the sphag and charcoal that Vanda lover mentioned. It's a lot of work keeping it moist.

I have my vanda in glass and it gets morning sun from about 8 to about 3 in the afternoon. It too has purple freckles where the sun is shinning on her. She is blooming sized but has yet to bloom for me. It is a coerulea so when she does I expect it will be as the season changes to autumn/ winter.

The glass method really works for me. Since I have had her she has put out so many new sub roots and a new root from the stem and she is on her first leaf now as well.

Default vase vs. basket

Newbie here How long do Vandas last? Do they last longer or live better in the vases? I can still count the hours I have had my little Blue bird. She,yes she, is my first Vanda. She is 3 inches tall with a 1.5" little spike. I am thinking it is best not to disturb her until she is done flowering but if vase culture is superior to bark.....

Leave her in the bark until she has finished flowering. They don't like to be disturbed while in spike.
How long they last depends on the type of vanda. I have one that lasts over 2 months and blooms up to 4 times a year. Some hybrids are almost constantly in bloom. I have a little rhynchocentrum that is almost constantly in bloom.

Smile Vanda Troubles

My Vanda is hanging - basket... no chips or soil or foiliage. Live in the Northern MidWest. Just began getting dry and cool but I grow a ton of plants indoors under growlights including 5' tropicals... so humidity is higher in my apt even though I have electric heating. I water everything daily and the Vanda is soaked 2x/day (used to soak 1x/day for 8 min but now soak 2x/day for 8 min ea. time)... but the roots are still very dry during the rest of the day although I'm sure it's getting some humidity from the overall atmosphere... anyone who visits always claims it's warm and humid in my place plus in winter I run a humidifier. It's both good for my tropicals and for me alike (I'm Hypothyroid myself).

My issue is that although the roots break off from time-to-time, and still absorb water and get green right after a soak (some of them do), my Vanda leaves are splitting and getting grouves in them. See pics.

If you have ideas please post.

Thanks.

Hi 1Satine,

If the leaves are getting a wrinkled appearance that is a sure sign of dehydration. Does your Vanda have any green growing tips or are they pretty much all with until you water them?

The Vandas I have with no medium in their baskets are all in vases with as many of the roots as possible going into the vase and get a 2 to 3 hour daily soak. At first I started with a 30 to 60 minute soak be realized that was not enough. Since I started with the longer soaks I am getting faster growth and better flowering.
