hi Suzie, 'normally' if you soak them long enough the roots become alot more flexible....but you need to have the vase for it first... How big are your plants/roots?
have you tried IKEA? ..good luck in finding some vases

I did not give the name but around here there is an excellent selection of vases at A.C.Moore and Michaels.
Also, the floral section of at least 1 grocery store is willing to sell vases. (same ones as the above stores but more expensive.)
I've also found them at thrift shops
Secondly, I know it is sacrilegious but If you are so blessed with roots, consider trimming them. At least one on line person recommends trimming a quarter of the roots routinely. She suggests it stimulates root branching. I'm not sure about that but I doubt it would hurt to do a little haircut.

Hi Suzie,
Have you tried Kmart? I boght some realy big vases from Kmart last week, and they were on special 40% off!
I've becomed vanda obessed!
The roots on my Princess Mikasa Blue has gone crazy, and the Blue Magic is in spike, that is after 5 weeks, I am really excited!

This growing technique is worth the try. Having said that, my first attempt was a disaster, I managed to kill one vanda, but it is all good now!

Buds WOW thats some serious root action going on there!

I've looked at Marshalls, Ross, Walmart, Michaels - I think I found some enormous glass ones at marshalls but they were HUGE- too big, so I dont know, I'll go back & see...

My vandas are not doing so well because of the dryness--- I think soaking on a daily basis would help, I tried soaking before putting them into a vase, I think I broke most of one plants core roots and now its dead :S ...

I spray everyday and give them about 40-50% humidity-
Im thinking of trying a rooting hormone like keikiroot or such...

Moving vandas in and out of the vase would break a lot of roots! I would recommend you filling the vase up and let the plant soak for 30mins per day (depending on your conditions). I never move my vandas out of their vases.

My vases are huge (7L), so I had real problems trying to pour the water out! After 2 days, I thought I was going to either get RSI (Repetivitive Strain Injury) or drop these large vases!

Someone from the UK web site suggested 'siphoning' with a clear chemistry hose. I have been 'siphoning' everyday, sometimes I accidentally get a mouth full of fertilizer

haha. What we go through for these plants!!!
Anyhow it wasnt the fact that I was taking them in and out, I was trying to budge them in the vase- apparently too small, and broke the only few strong roots it has- so it died. I will NOT be trying that again.
If I dont find a vase large enough then they'll just keep hanging...

And all the other vandaholics. I use high vases and to empty them I avoid lifting just tip till most of the water runs out this lets you support the plant .Keep the bottom of the vase on the staging till its empty.
