Yellowing leaves on my vanda - Orchid Board

I just noticed that my Vanda had yellow spots on the two lowest leaves and when I touched them they came off. What can this be? What can I do to avoid losing this plat? She is very special to me. Here are some pics. Normaly, I keep her in a vase (only the roots, not the plant). When I'm home, I hang her a while outside and when the sun starts getting too hot, I put her back in again.

I'm not an expert on Vanda's, but the plant looks healthy overall. I wonder if the bottom two leaves aren't just old and the plant is shedding them.

They are not the very bottom leaves as far as I can tell in the picture, and that would worry me.

I don't know much about these, but what worries me more is that this is how the death of mine started, progressing with more and more leaves dropping until nothing was left.

Mine was I think (but I'm not sure) due to cold and dark over the winter, so I would say yours is something different and I hope won't have the same outcome.

Hope someone else can help you with this

Rosie, you are correct. I looked at those pictures again and there are leaves below. Not sure what that would mean. Hopefully someone with more experience growing Vanda's will chime in and offer some insight.

Vandas will lose leaves because of not enough light, not enough water or not enough food. I think cold temperatures may do it also but I don't have experience with that. I water my vandas every morning and keep them in a bright location. If yours were used to the humidity of a vase and now they're out in a less humid environment, that could cause it. water often. Good luck.

Maybe you can leave the vanda just outside for the meantime. Vandas can take in a lot of heat. Mine is 24/7 outside and sometimes i don't water them 2-3 days. and maybe your vanda is stressed out because as you said that you put her back in again when its too hot. FME, vandas doesnt want to be disturbed as much as possible.

Many of my Vandas have lost their lower leaves the same way. Most of the plants keep on growing and new roots come out in these areas. Part of what I think happens is that there is to much moisture that collects in the leave axis and the cooler night temperatures help fungus start and root off the leaves.
I would not worry about your plant. It looks good and healthy.

I agree completely with this. Leaves close to the bottom of the plants can also be damaged from moving them around, and the water in the leaf axis will make the damage worse. Taking it in and out of the vase could cause damage.

I disagree to some extent.

These leaves are yellowing from the crown of the plant outward and indicate an infection to me.

Furthermore, you can see the base of the leaves above them beginning to turn yellow.

I would remove the diseased leaves and treat with a copper fungicide as I think this infection is similar to the crown rot that phalaenopsis get.

I have one vanda that went through this and I was able to stop the progression with multiple treatments of copper fungicide alternating with physan.
I have a good 8 inches of "bare" plant between roots and remaining leaves...
It is getting new leaves on top but not yet new roots in the bare area.
Looks a bit like a fan on a stick

I am hoping it will make it.

From what I have read, this can be an ominous sign for your vanda.
