A question about Vanda roots
Default A question about Vanda roots

Hello everybody. I hope this is the correct place to post this question. If it is not, please feel free to move it the correct place.

I have noticed that the last ten centimeters of the aerial roots on my Vanda orchids are yellow. Above this they look healthy to me, white with a green tip. While all the roots change colour to green when they have had a good spray of water, these yellow parts stay yellow.

I have also noticed that there are a number of dead roots in amongst the live healthy roots. Should these be cut out or are they perfectly safe to leave in place?

And one last question. I have a small shoot growing from the base of one of my Vandas. I'm not worried about this, but is this a normal growth habit?

I'd say the roots look fine. If you wanted to take a clean snipper to those very dead roots, you could with no problems. The growth at the base is a keiki. Looks like it might be struggling a little but with continued care, you may get a baby out of this

I agree with Sue.

Also, I'd recommend you to pay attention to your watering. Vandas shrivel their roots like that when they aren't getting enough water. If you're growing it outside bare-root, you should be watering it daily (or even twice a day, depending on how hot it is).

If you give it the care it needs, you'll notice small nubs poking out randomly around the roots or near the base of the plant. These are new roots. Vandas seem to stop growing when they go into bloom, and resume when they're done.

Agree with previous posts as well. You can cut those dead roots. Others roots are ok.
For myself, I water my Vanda every morning with huge amount of water. Don't forget fertilizer (for myself , once a week) and everything will be ok.
