Hurricane Sun Damage
Default Hurricane Sun Damage

During Hurricane Ian, I brought in all my orchids that were not attached to trees in a huge hurry. The got crammed into a room and pretty much ignored for many days. This little vanda was unknowingly touching a window that received sun the whole time. I know they are tough and I have seen some amazing comebacks, but did I push this one too far. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Hope all you others orchid folks down here in SW Florida did OK. Photos Attached

I hope you and your family came out okay for the hurricane, if it were my plant I would soak her, fertilize her, and let her do her thing. I have had some pretty bad burns on my orchids when putting them back outside after the winter here in south Louisiana. I have found that if the other side that isn't burned is still mainly good she will continue to grow. Although the brown has turned black and those parts that were burned didn't come back. I have all so had them burn like that and throw Kiki's to save herself in the burnt spots. She may have a little damage now, but at least you won't lose her all together.
Good luck.

Like she said. Often the other side is OK. If the stem and the growing tip deep down in the crown are unharmed it should resume growing. If the growing tip is cooked there's a good chance one of the dormant meristems, one at the base of each leaf, will be undamaged and begin growing.
