Vandas with dead roots Female
Default Vandas with dead roots

I am new to orchids, just a couple of years. I have done well with my Vandas until now.
I had them in a temporary greenhouse so the temps stayed between 60 - 80 all winter. Last month, I took them out of the greenhouse and hung them near my pool. Shortly thereafter we had some pretty cool nights, down to 40's and I think about the same time they were attacked by thrips. Got the thrips under control and some are trying to grow but it appears that lots of roots have died.
Question - should I cut off any of the tips that appear to be dead?
Question 2 - Next winter, do I need to transition them more carefully.
Thanks in advance to all who answer.

Don't ever cut roots. Vandas in poor health need all the roots they have. Roots will branch when conditions improve.

You've had both cold weather and hot/dry weather this winter, I think. Both are hard on Vandas. Nights under 50 F / 10C can stun them for months. Many will die in the low 40s / 4-6C. Vandas prefer warm weather and high humidity.

Don't let them get so cold in the future. Water every day. Go to the Motes Orchids Web site and sign up for the E-mail newsletter. They send out a message each month telling what to do that month with your plants.
