Default Vanda setup- macramé hangers

Hi everyone!

I’m trying to come up with a somewhat aesthetically pleasing solution for hanging my vandas. Well let’s be honest ... my other half is pushing me to do it I’ve attached some pictures of what I’m working with ...

- I’m wondering if you think hanging them in these macramé hangers will pose any issues to the plants?

I do daily soaks, so on one hand I think the macramé will help retain moisture around the roots during the day, but I imagine it could also cause issues if it holds onto too much moisture. I do spray every couple weeks with diluted physan as preventative care.

-I’m also wondering if these hangers appear to shade too much light from the plants as compared to the metal hangers?

I’ve got an east facing window and supplementing with COB LEDs. I manage to keep humidity around 60%.

Thanks everyone for your help!

Hm, interesting idea! One of my questions is what material is the macrame hanger made out of? If it is something like cotton, I worry about degradation pretty quickly in those conditions. If its something like nylon I think it will hold up better. I agree with you that the amount of sunlight getting through to the plant is quite decreased by the size of the macrame hangers. Are there other sizes available?

Another idea if your partner wants a slightly more "beautified" orchid area might be replacing the hanging wires with chains? Somehow that can make it look a bit fancier I think. (The wires can look like clothes-hangers, but chain looks more intentional somehow.) Although really I'm concerned that they aren't already impressed enough with the beauty of your flowers to just ignore the hangers. ;-)

Thanks! You confirmed what I suspected

I will try to hunt down some hanging basket chains that are long enough ... also hard to find ones with 4 “legs”! Might have get crafty!

Yes, I think you might have to make your own! Maybe you can enlist the help of the person who is critiquing your setup to see if they're willing to assist with the assembly of some pretty chain versions? :-) Good luck and keep us updated!

I’ve ordered some 2-point chain hangers and will give those a try!

For now, I realized I might as well hang them outside on the deck while the weather is warm.

It’s going down to a nighttime low of 52F / 11C , so hopefully they will adjust okay.

I don't grow Vandas but those temps might be too low.

I realized afterwards that I bring them in at night to soak anyways It would probably be a tad on the cold side for them, but if I did leave them out overnight at least it is very sheltered.
