Default Vanda Mimi palmer - best set up to keep inside

Hi ya'll,

i have 3 plants of Mimi Palmer coming in (and one Bangkok sunset...) and I'm scratching my head what is the best way to set them up inside? I live in Virginia, so technically weather outside should be good enough from May to September to hang them on the padio but not sure yet and looking for advises.
Putting them in pot don't really seem right to me.
Hanging with plastic bags is also not what I really would prefer unless this is common practice.

thanks in advance!

I put my plants outside when the nigh temperatures are usually above 60. I live in North Texas (DFW area) and mine have been outisde for about two weeks. An occasional brief dip into the 50s won't harm them as long as the days are warm. And for Vandas, a basket is definitely the way to go, but you'll have to water every day, maybe even twice a day when it is hot.

A lot of Dutch people grow Vandas in vase culture on a sunny windowsill. Basically the plants are placed (bareroot) in a rather tall/large vase, and watered by filling the vase with water and then dumping it out. The vase keeps the humidity around the roots a bit longer, and avoid dripping water everywhere in your home. This method may not be very workable though if you want the plants to spend part of the year outside.

My Bangkok Subset is outside in summer as JScott describes. It's in a basket with a few chunks of coconut husk. It's done well, blooms every year. But it is going to need watering daily year round.

Thank you and the others,
But where do you keep them for the rest of the year?

Mine I'd right next to a south facing window. However, you probably have a bigger percentage of sun down there. More like JScott. You'd have to adjust perhaps.

Mine hangs right next to the window. From the curtain rod, actually. I should soak it every day but often forget. I take it to a dishpan in the sink and let it soak until the roots are green. The floor is tile, a drip or two wouldn't hurt. I put a pinch of fertilizer in the water.

I've wanted to do the Vanda thing for so long but felt I couldn't provide the right conditions. Checked out YouTube and saw vase culture. It has worked for me but I still have 2 plants on hangers. These 2 go in the shower for a good spray and weather permitting hand outside but nights still too chilly to be left out. So back in they come and hang from edge of growlights. The other 4 are in vases which I fill and have left them alone for 12-24 hrs and then dump out water, with or without fert. These are also under or very near growlights and 1 has a spike! I usually do this 1-2x/wk. Ceiling fan is also a plus. Give vase culture a try. I was surprised and happy.
