I thought vanda roots grew down??
Default I thought vanda roots grew down??

This is an odd plant. I inherited/rescued a 16’ long vanda that was wrapped around a big tree. This guy was a really big out-growth on the cane with no roots.
In the process of moving and sectioning the monster I accidentally broke him off.
Thinking I had killed for sure I stuck it into a ball of coir and watered often and it rooted!!! Yay

Thing is the roots are wild and unlike any other vanda I have. They are like the top roots of a phaleanopsis.

Anyone seen anything like this? Should I be concerned? Any special treatment?

Good save! Vanda roots go wherever they want. (I have found that when mounted, they don't necessarily even get intimate with the mount, roots run free) I think keep on doing what you're doing, looks successful to me!

Thanks Roberta!

Saving orchids is my favorite sport. I have even saved a few badly crown rotted phals from a florist’s dumpster. Shhh don’t tell anyone

We have to remember that vandas are vines - fortunately, slow-growing ones - but vines, nonetheless, so they "reach out" to try and grab anything they can that will support future climbing.
