Default Awaharibeni in spike!

I have had this plant for over a year, May 2017. It was a Mother’s Day gift purchased from Orchids Web. It has grown well though it has always had a few leaves with yellow tips, never lost any leaves.

This morning while watering well, we are going to be away for a few days, I found the tiniest spike! I never expected this plant to flower. I actually had to grab a macro lens to be sure this really is a spike it’s that small. Or my old eyes are worse than I thought

According to Orchids Web once it begins to flower it can bloom off and on for an entire year. I’ll be happy with once, hope to see flowers soon.

In the first picture the spike is at the top of the plant a bit to the right. Hard to see.

I love that one! Been eying it on NWO, didn't know OW sells it... The growth habit is just so interesting and the variation from the pine needle types is super cool. I also think the flower in combo with the needle growth habit will be quite beautiful, look forward to photos of it with the flowers open!

Thank you U bada! It is a neat Neo, reminds me a bit of Seiryujishi without the twist. I have Seiryujishi as well and love that one too. I like needle leaf Neos, for the most part they stay small. I have Fukujumaru, it’s real small (like a mini needle leaf) and Yoroidoushi.

Seiryujishi has normal size flowers, this Awaharibeni looks like the blooms may be very small. I almost missed them this morning and was very surprised. I will be sure and update when the flowers open. I hope to see a bit of pink in the bloom. I’m not sure if I’ve seen pictures of Awaharibeni blooms.

If you like the needle leaf Neo you should have one or two, great plants even if they never flower. When my Seiryujishi flowered I was shocked! Al was jealous as hell, Seiryujishi is his favorite Neo and his plant has never flowered. Of course I had to show him pictures.

Thanks for your info on those types... I love all the ones you've mentioned. I've asked fore seiryujishi and a yoroidoushi from Satomi and separate occasions and lost out... lol. Actually I hadn't known of fukujumaru, another to add to list!

So was the seiryujishi you bloomed from Al's seiryujishi? It's curious it hadn't bloomed for Al in his GH... you scored a point for us home growers!

Just today realized how much money I spent this year just on neos, going to have to start fasting on the now... maybe an awaharibeni next year if I can last LOL Best to let all my new ones settle in anyway, I admire you because you seemed to have mastered restraint for the last couple years you've been collecting and still manage to have such an interesting mix of them...

I have been busy for weeks doing a reupholster of a couple of antique pieces of furniture. I almost missed the flowers! This morning I took a couple of pictures, always difficult to capture white flowers well.

The Awaharibeni has two small flowers, I am so happy I took the time to look! Hopefully Orchids Web is correct and it will continue to bloom.

U bada, you had asked about my Seiryujishi. My plant came from Orchids Web, not Al’s. When I initially did a search for Seiryujishi, Orchids Web was one of the few pictured plants in flower. I understand they are difficult to get to bloom so for that reason I purchased my plant from them. It is a division of their plant. Al absolutely loves his Seiryujishi and was so jealous when I shared pictures of my plant in bloom.

I like the needle leaf Neos and the few I own are small. The Fukujumaru is very small, I have two of them. My second plant came from Satomi and it is a large clump, really cute!

What a cute plant (and a nice clump), and congrats on the spike and blooms! You thought the blooms would be small, but they look rather normal? It sounds like it was a good idea to buy a Seiryujishi division of a plant with a known record when it comes to blooming.

Right now I have my fingers crossed and holding my breath for what looks like a spike on my Yoroidoshi, which I expected to never see blooms on since they're known for rarely blooming. But it's turning reddish, and I'm afraid that it may be blasting...

Thank you Camille! I was so surprised to see the buds and yes, they were tiny. These blooms are somewhat smaller than others I’ve had, still larger than I thought they might be.

I hope you have blooms on your Yoroidoushi, mine has not flowered. It has what appears to be the beginning of buds that have died, a few of those actually. I believe Yoroidoushi blooms from the apex of the plant? The blasted or dried growths on my plant are low on the plant so I really don’t know what to make of them. They were on the plant when I purchased it if I remember correctly.

My Tamakongo has a spike emerging as well but it has stalled. It takes me forever to water these plants, I’m always checking them over for spikes and new growths. I still find them fascinating!

Hope to see your Yoroidoushi in bloom soon!

Thanks BJ! This was a nice surprise, unexpected really. I had to do a double take when I first noticed it. How are your traveling Neos doing?

Leafmite, thank you! You and me both, the fragrance is amazing and this time of year has become a favorite of mine. In the morning the aroma of fresh coffee and Neos blooming is wonderful!
