Most bean leaf Neos are not variegated, and those that are generally are highly expensive.

N Kinkujacu (golden peacock) is one of the easily affordable ones. The variation occurs after the green leaf emerges given good sunlight.

The variety is described as being variegated only on the top surface but mine even is variegated along the edges of the undersurface as well, probably due to the good sunlight I expose it to.

This plant I have grown for many years. Easy to bloom, but I never took a picture of it at that time. It really is an example of a Neo which is grown for its foliage, no surprise.

The vast majority of Kinkujaku strains do not get this much variegation no matter how well it's cared for.

Not only has yours been grown very very well, it's a very nice strain of the variety.

I have a Kinkujaku that I purchased from Seed Engei last June. It is a two growth plant not nearly as impressive as your beautiful plant. The larger fan on my plant has better variegation with the yellow coloring along the underside of the leaves. The smaller fan is slowly developing more variegation.

I look forward to seeing this plant grow into a nice specimen. Your plant is beautiful.

Just got this one in an order from orchid web that arrived yesterday. They said variegation isn't prominent but it was not a bad price for the number of growths. Not sure if that means they had them growing in a shadier spot to save space or genetics they're not going to be all that variegated... if the former I'm going to want to grow it bright, how much light do you give it?

Actually if you have a second to run through how you grow them that would be appreciated. I know you mentioned a bit to me on another post, but it's hard to do searches on here and piece together people's culture advice to get a big picture of how someone on here grows their collection. thanks so much!

I grow under natural sunlight in a West window through a bug screen which yields minimal shading. The plant gets good sunlight.

When ordering a particular variety for its characteristics, ask the seller to email you pictures of the exact plant you will be getting. Then decide whether to order it.

Yeah, point taken... in truth I just wanted a bean leaf, green leaves are fine, at a reasonable price for more growths than fewer and having ruby-ish root tips is a plus. A tamakongou would have been fine, but for some reason don't care for the flowers. the kinkujaku, appears to have more or less normal neo flowers with a longer spur and typical position? Just read the coloring forms as the leaf matures?

But probably I'll just be ordering more from Satomi when she's around here. I'll probably be by Cal orchid in July when they have their Neo show weekend. Satomi is usually there and I can see the plants in person.

I have a window with a similar situation, it faces south but with mountain blocking the harshest light, west light comes in fairly strong in afternoon through a screen on one side of the window. As it turns out that window, where i grow a lot of warm growers decently, it warms 10 degrees during the day on sunny days and get a temp differential, and well we get mostly sunny days... so I'm going to try it there along with another variegated one- hosoba kinruoukaku- which came beautifully golden. Outside on the balcony, outside in general, the sun is way too intense, so the 3 I have out there will have to stay in shade.
