My first Neo and most certainly not my last ;)

I've grown orchids for years...primarily vandas as they are hands down my favorite. I just got my first neo last week and I have to ask what is it about these little ones that make them so addictive! I want them all now!!

I've never posted a picture here before so I hope this link works. My Neofinetia Falcata Manjushage:

Quick question. Do you all grow these outside? I grow all my Vandas outside in dappled bright sun until the temp drops below 50F. We have high humidity which they really seem to love. I would think the little ones would like it as well but the growing in moss vs bare root is throwing me off. I have a hybrid Hiroshima Choice (V. flabellata x Neof. falcata) that loves living outside but again it is bare root so I want to be sure my Manjushage in its traditional moss ball will be happy outside as well. Hey there! Small world. Nice to see you here. I love seeing all the people getting into orchids on reddit and there are a few that really know their stuff but this board I consider the orchid braintrust. So many smart and knowledgeable folks here.

Thank you! Yes that is one of my Tennessee Walkers. He is my heart. That little guy is an amazing horse. He had a horrible break. After six weeks at Texas A&M he is all healed up and back to keeping all the bigs in line.

I think a lot of people in eastern North America grow Neofinetias outside during warm humid weather, and they like it. Watch out for critters.

Thank you for the input. Out she goes then. I just don't want to screw this up. I don't like losing orchids and I definitely don't like losing $$$ orchids.

I think the climate in Japan is a lot like the southeastern US.

Welcome to the Orchid Board! I am impressed that you have started your Neofinetia journey with one of the most highly sought out varieties. Well done. This is a great place to learn about Neofinetia. Your Manjushage 曼珠沙華 is a very appealing plant. Have you seen your plant in bloom?

I cannot tell where you are in the US. Are you in Tennessee? Like others have suggested, and you imply that you grow Vanda outside? Then Neofinetia will probably do okay outside. They can tolerate temperatures below 40F. In Japan, they grow them outside. You can find pictures of snow clad Neofinetia on the Internet.

Have you seen your plant in bloom? The flowers are unique compared to other Neofinetia flowers. Here is a picture of mine.

I've found that if you crop it slightly, or edit it in some other way, it will appear upright.
