If anyone really wants to get into/understand the Samurai culture, look into the Bushido and Miyamoto Musashi.

And then get back to us.

I didn't want to go into a several page long explanation on Neofinetia hystory here Anomymouse! Just a short line to help understand.
I've been studying Neofinetia and everything around it for many years.

General specifics for this locality are the larger growths and leaf length and larger flowers than the standard Japanese form. It's a sturdy and easy grower and it can be grown from seed, mericlone or division.
Remember it needs a cooling down period in order to get it to flower in spring or early summer, different from most hybrids with N. falcata that can flower at any time.

On a side note I also saw you mentioned you had Neo "samurai". samurai is part of an English translation on the naming of the species in Japan. The "Fukiran" meaning rich and noble orchid, In history kept and cherished by the samurai, hens the name still often used "samurai orchid". It's not a name of a variety
I've learned so much about the nefinetia culture from this thread. Have this bookmarked this for future re-reading.

Have a unheated room with a big west facing window where the little guys will sleep. In Houston, it gets cold during December and January. Two are still sending out roots, so will take the dormancy cue from them.

Interesting about the meaning of "Fukiran." Have two neofinetia falcata, one tag has 'samurai orchid' and the other doesn't. Ah well, they've both put up with me for this long, and they're cute as a button.

Yazz,
"Samurai orchid" and "Wind orchid", are both used as an english name for Neofinetia falcata. They are not variety names. But whatever they are called, they are my favorites for over 25 years now.

What I meant was, what is the relevance? The term Samurai is bandied about but I suspect it is more romantic marketing (I also suspect there is some shady elements in the modern trade) than historical accuracy. Even if it is accurate, the caste system was abolished (yes, Samurai is a caste) a long time ago. I doubt the Japanese go around calling them Samurai orchids. They do call them Furan, which is wind orchid. The suffix "fuki" does mean wealth, rank, etc.

My understanding is that the RHS/AOS and Fukiran naming convention criteria are different. There are rules that govern each. Not all Neofinetia (Vanda) falcata is a Fukiran. Not all named are Fukiran.

There is a painting depicting a higher ranking personage admiring a plant. Is the pursuit of painting, the pursuit of growing or both that makes it a Samurai pursuit?

I skimmed the syllabus but didn't take the class. Feel free to enlighten me.
