Default Fugaku root tip color changed

Got a Fugaku in May 2012, a small plant with 5 individual fans and very nice yellow variegation. However, it didn't thrive: only 2 fans survived.

One has a new growth (yay!), but what is really strange is now its root tips are ruby not the normal green. Any ideas?

Adrienne it's good to hear your plant may be turning things around. Root tip color seems to be both genetic and environment. My fugaku has ruby roots but also green. I seems the new ones remain ruby and any branching comes out green tipped. But if I keep mine in cooler weather, all tips are ruby. Just an observation as I'm not asserting anything known trait here.

Some usually have plain leaves with little to no variegation. The more variegations the more expensive the plant. My plant have green root tips but a ruby root tip must be a unique variance. I will always believe your tag especially if you got it from a very reliable source.

Some variants don't seem to have a stable root tip color. I had an Amami that showed green, mud and ruby all at the same time earlier this spring. I've also had others that would change green and mud color often. I don't really understand what triggers this.

Hi Bud, got the Seed-Engei plant via the Lyman Estate Greenhouse so I believe the label and as my Neo sensei sold it to me. It was small so it very very reasonable.

I want to know what caused the three fans to perish and only two survived and gave you a new growth? Usually Seed-Engei plants are raised to be robust, healthy and they don't release defective ones. They are very particular about this.

Interesting note on the roots! My setsuzan I think has reddish mud brown tips and what happens is they look nice and pinkish red when they first emerge and then they turn to a brownish color. I'd love to see photos of your Fugaku's roots!
