I probably should probe into the moss a bit, but since it's very fresh moss, I pretty much trust that Seed Engei sold me a plant with healthy roots. If I were to kill this one, I would probably throw myself into the compost pile with it.

New moss is always a good sign and what I'm about to say should in no way diminish Satomi or her plants; I speak only of my experience. However, I received a fugaku from her that is truly beautiful but the plant had next-to-no roots. I didn't bother to email or call her out on it-- neos do weird things and in the end, even with nearly no roots, you can always get them to make more if you baby them enough.

So with that said, and this is just me, I'd look.

Me too. I let the plant acclimate to my environment for a week to three weeks. When they first arrive I put them in a bucket of warm water tinged with Pisan 20 and insecticidal soap. I started doing this because one of the first plants I got had this little, brown bug that has pinchers for a tail. Ever seen that? I think they like roots and sphagnum. So that eliminates those critters.

Then when I repot, I have always been amazed at how crunched up all the roots are in the center of the pot rather than spread out. So I re-pot in the high mounds, with the roots spread out around the mound. Regardless of how new the moss is, I have learned that I needed to do that after a two or three week quarantine.

That is the insect! Thank you Joy! I have seen this insect crawling out of the plants trying to get out of the water. The link you provided makes me think they would harm my Neofinetia. Is that the case?

They've never hurt my plants
