Rosie and David;

My apologies if I seemed rather harsh. It wasn't meant as such. I guess I was a bit tired yesterday.

David;

Glenn can help you select good starter plants too if you want. He recommended Amami Island as a good starter which I love. It's a slightly bigger plant, has bigger flowers, and since it comes from near the southern end of the Ryukyu Island near Okinawa, it seems to be a bit more forgiving with warmer winter temps like you would find indoors.

Cheers.
Jim

3 years and no posts... O_o I wonder if I will even get an answer. One can only try...
I have had a Neo. 'Rainbow' since 9/2010. I gave it too much sun to start and sunburned it really good. Since then I have had some growth but not too much. I get one new fan a year and not much else. No blooms, spikes, etc.
I have read that Neo are slow growers but isn't this a bit too slow?
I have added a few more Neos since I got bit by the bug in 2010 and similar situation. I grow mounded in sphag, live in Southern Cali, and water when "crunchy."
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I believe the one is Darwinara Rainbow Stars (Neofinetia x Darwinara Charm) - further parentage info can be found here:
Darwinara Rainbow Stars - Orchids Wiki
Are you able to post a pic?

Neofinetias like to be bright, somewhat cool, and somewhat dry in winter. I'm not sure about Darwinara, tho.

I'm not an expert, so I can't say for certain that it is a hybrid, but I think it's likely. So, that may not want the cool, dry winter.

The most recent leaves are smaller than the older ones, so there may be an issue - how are the roots?

You are probably likely to get more replies if you start a new thread

You know... It never occurred to me to start a new thread. I don't know where my brain went but it sure wasn't here! Ha ha ha~
And yes, the roots are not prolific and great on my Rainbows. But time and love will heal!
Thanks again!

If Neos can, in theory go into the garage in a box for the winter....where is the light they need?

Default Orchids Slowing Down

Summer is waning and here in the Midwest it has been unusually chilly, tho the rain has really helped with all my plants! Oh, and Garden. What I am wandering about is that my neos seem to be stalled. Some root growth. Some leaf growth going on. New fans are there but have stalled as they have shown themselves. Other Neos seem to have bud shoots tho not green--just sort of green, red, brown. Are these orchids stalled and ready for next growth spurt/season? I have multiple orchids that have sheathed yet no buds for some...I figure later in Winter/Spring. I have not worked with Neos until this summer and I have gleaned a lot from these forums Thanks...Ted

What about N. falcata intergenerics? I was thinking about purchasing a N. falcata x V. coerulescens, and I'm curious to what the dormancy would be like, if any is required. I have a winter of 60-70F, with a summer of 70-80F

Edit : I'll make a thread for this, after reading the previous pages of this thread

Hmmmm...I am not well versed on Neo intergenerics tho I would tend to think they should do OK in similar conditions. I would be gentle regarding really cold situations tho I wouldn't hesitate keeping them out in weather in the low 50s F. All mine are Neo cultivars or Dendrobium moniliforme cultivars and they bloom and grow very well.
